Hello from The Digital Filter

Apple's performance in the last quarter of 2011 caught the eye this week. Again, they have come under fire for their usual practice of cautious forecasting followed by the equally standard practice of smashing the 'estimate' to smithereens. However, this time the figures were truly extraordinary.

Here are four facts that put the achievement into context  -

1) Apple earned a huge $46.3 billion in revenue in this quarter - more than in the whole of 2009

2) Apple's $13 billion quarterly profit is the second-biggest in U.S. history. Only topped by Exxon's $14.8 billion in 2008

3) Apple's profits ($13 billion) exceeded Google's entire revenue ($10.6 billion)

4) Another way of putting it: The Music industry's digital revenues in the whole of 2011: $5.2bn. Apple's revenues in Q4 2011 alone: $46.3bn

Elsewhere this week, there has been a lot of debate about 'information overload' ; and I like the different perspective offered in a recent Radio 4 audio piece from Lisa Jardine (at the bottom of the email). This Points of View piece, shows that this is actually an age old problem, from a time when people's greatest fear was to do with losing information for good.

The video piece this week is somewhat lighthearted. Effectively a re-hash of Lionel Ritchie's 1984 'classic' Hello - here the vocal is made up of film clips edited together. Clever and eminently watchable. How many films can you pick out?

Until next week

best wishes

Nick
